wedding post card from – Newport Beach

This was an perfect end of summer escape to the shores of Newport Beach from the heat of Manhattan. This was also a beautiful end to summer and the new beginning of a marriage.

Viv was stunning, from head to toe (she even monogrammed the soles of her wedding day shoes with her new initials VC). So happy to be together, as the maid of honor said during her speech, Viv does light up when she sees Rob, beams when she puts her arms around him.

In their coordinating red dresses, the bridesmaids fluttered around Viv, putting the final pieces in place, including a blue ribbon, a gift from all of them, pinned under the bustle of the dress.

Vivian and Rob were married at the Balbo Bay Yacht Club, bringing with them a host of friends from across the country to celebrate their union. the ceremony was held in an intimate hedged lawn, with rows of white chairs facing the bridal party standing under an arbor of flowers. The cranberry dresses of the bridesmaids popped against the hedge walls. A gentle breeze came in off the water. A reading from Guy de Maupassant, read by the bride’s brother set a thoughtful tone and the ceremony was completed with Buddhist vows, which as newly joined husband and wife, pledging their union, they recited in unison.

A pop of a cork announced the romantic gondola ride, where the newly weds can spend a few quiet moments alone before their grand entrance into the ballroom. Music from the Labor day celebration on the beach was the soundtrack for the boat ride.

Ballroom was gorgeous, continuing the cranberry red theme, and incorporating, like the orchid boutonnières, horsetail, as a geometric element to the florals. A live band provided the background for the dancing mania that ensued.
Here are a few of my favorites from their Labor Day weekend wedding.

wedding post card from – Bolinas

Early Saturday morning, I was listening to NPR, and was struck by the phrase “overcoming my own sense of urgency.” The author was speaking to the need of remembering to be present in your own life, and how the everyday chores and to-do lists can overwhelm you to the point where you have to consciously make the decision to slow down and enjoy where you are.

I am not able to post image from Saturday’s wedding, but I did want to share a bit about it, as it was an example for me of being present, enjoying your time together, and being alive.

Each person is unique, each of us creating our own specific imprint on those around us. Each person, each family, each union. It is a priveledge to witness this regularly as a photographer, to witness and to document it. Saturday’s couple was truly present in their love, and speaking in their true voices.

The wedding was, simply put, beautiful; in its location, in the scope of friends and family gathered, and most importantly in an internal (and eternal) beauty of spirit.

The ceremony was held in a gorgeous pastoral setting, nestled between trees at the edge of Bolinas Lagoon. The service was pieced together of Buddhist and Jewish tradition, celebrated their love, and pledged growth. The ceremony was followed by family style dining in the candle and chandelier lit Peace Barn, and finally, much festive dancing. During his toast, the groom described his new wife as radiant, an apt word for her and for the entire wedding.

As I wound my way home, the headlights of the car caught the antler of a deer standing at the side of the road. I slowed down, and looked at it, really took the time to look at the deer, while he looked at me.

Sometimes people get right to the point.

Amy, the bride, absolutely gorgeous in perfectly fit green dress, and Luis sharp in a navy blue suit met us at the beach to do a quick portrait shoot before we met their families in the park.  I was so thrilled to have been one of the very few people to be at this ceremony, at the edge of the city.

Overlooking the water, we perched on a clifftop with Amy and Luis, their parents, their siblings, and one nephew, to witness and to photograph their vows. The service culminated in heartfelt and teary-eyed exchange of vows, as the sun set behind Amy’s father, who doubled as their minister and officiant. A few delicious bottles of champagne, toted to the site in a cooler, were shared afterwards. And then they were off, to delight in an extraordinary dinner at Aqua.

An unsuspected bonus to shooting such an intimate wedding? Being asked to sign as a witness on their marriage license.

A few portraits taken just before and just after the ceremony.
